This isn’t a one-way relationship
Putting the Social back in Social Media
We focus a lot on producing content and trying to engage prospective clients with beautiful images and catchy copy - but there is another side to social media: interaction. You might be chatting with your followers - which is great! - but how often are you commenting on the social media posts of your clients, vendors, or other businesses and organizations with your pro account?
Embrace the “social” part of social media. And no, liking posts isn’t enough. Instagram likes it when accounts are sociable. The algorithms, and your prospective customers, want to see you out there making comments on other posts. Why? Well, let’s pretend you follow Bob’s Trucks on Instagram,. When you comment on Bob’s posts, his followers will see that you commented, and might want to check you out And then Bob’s Trucks may turn around and start following you, and, in turn, comment on your posts - so then that is a double loop back to your profile. Even better than commenting? Ask a question! “Bob, that truck is beautiful - What kind of mileage does it get?” Bob is sure to respond (Beyonce probably won’t, though).
Gary Vaynerchuk, a highly renown social media strategists, recommends interacting with 10 accounts per day as a tactic for growing your following and finding new customers.
So who do you want to interact with? Anyone who is local, relevant to your business, or relevant to your demographic. Local PTA posting pics of the recent recital? Gold! Local dog shelter hosting an adoption event? Perfect!
And it doesn’t have to have a time consuming practice. It should take maybe 15-20 each day to find relevant posts to comment on. Follow local hashtags to makes it even easier to find posts to comment on.
Now what are you waiting for? Get out there and INTERACT!
